The square is dominated by the immense Cathedral, or Duomo, Santa Maria del Fiore.

It’s distinctive green and red marble and its beautiful design make it one of the world’s loveliest cathedrals. Brunelleschi was so discouraged when he lost the competition to create the Baptistery doors that he turned to architecture. It was he who designed the huge dome, which he formed after studying the dome of the Pantheon in Rome.

The size won’t be apparent in these pictures, but it is one of the three largest domes in the world. It is surrounded by buildings and photographing it from ground level is impossible, but we tried.
People line up, sometimes for hours, to get in.
