MYKONOS, Page 1 ..

It's Monday, May 14th, and this must be Mykonos!

We know that because our hearts have gone soft and we can't stop smiling. This little island is our favorite place in Greece and every time we come here, we begin to talk of canceling the rest of our itinerary and just staying here.

Why do we love it so? Well. it's beautiful, of course .. brilliant flowers cascade over balconies and up whitewashed buildings....

An early this morning photo of the windmills and the sea from our balcony.

But I suspect the warmth we feel has is more because of our friendship with Nikos and his family , which has endured for more than two decades. We met Nikos our first night in Mykonos, over 20 years ago. He gave us a ride from the airport to the hotel where we had reservations, but pointed out his own Hotel Poseidon along the way. We didn't realize he owned it at the time. We planned to stay in Mykonos two days, but were so enchanted we decided to cancel our reservations for the last two weeks of our vacation in Paris and elsewhere and spend them here. We couldn't stay beyond that first night at the other hotel, so we remembered Nikos and came here. We returned to Mykonos and Hotel Poseidon many times, but this is our first chance to come back in 12 years.

The hotel driver met us at the airport last night and when we reached the hotel, Nikos' son, Theodore, was waiting. Soon Niko was at our door, greeting us with hugs, and we all shed a tear or so for the years that have passed and how good it was to see one another again.

This morning, we managed a quick walk through a nearby neighborhood and had lunch at the harbor. Mykonos, has grown unbelievably since our last visit, but its hold on us hasn't changed one iota.

We'll be back with much more, soon as we finish unpacking.

On to Tuesday!
